As the Alice Comedies drew to a close, Walt Disney wanted to focus on an animation-only series. And by the summer of 1927, the still young Disney studio was working on a new series for his distributor, starring.. this little guy!

Just look at him! He's such a fella, isn't he??

Disney had a one-year contract with Charles Mintz, who'd distribute Oswald's cartoons. The original series ran for (tk) cartoons, before the contract expired. By then, Walt Disney had rejected a new contract that would reduct the studio's income, forcing him to leave Oswald's production. (Ub Iwerks left alongside him.) Mintz now repossessed control over Oswald, even hiring away Disney's animators to keep production going. And although Disney had created Oswald, Mintz technically owned him, which allowed for him to pretty much steal everything for his own new studio. (worst person ever)

I'd say Oswald could settle in now, but honestly, he couldn't. See, Oswald's distribution outlet was tied with Universal Studios, as you'd probably notice in the title cards of his cartoons. The Mintz generation of his cartoons weren't as successful, and in 1929, Universal decided to directly produce Oswald with their own cartoon studio instead. Walter Lantz lead this new studio, and was given possesson of Oswald's contract. This left both Mintz without a rabbit to milk, and his animators out of work.

I'm not gonna say "Karma", but....

Anyway, the cartoons continued on from here, and eventually, Lantz brought forward his own take on Oswald (Basically, "Cuter" and "Make him like Disney's stuff") Oswald's design (-degraded-) changed up to suit this, most noticably in the 30's

Now, I'd love to talk about these redesigns, but..

yeah no
